Where did I see this exact same “What’s this thing” recently? I don’t know if it was this red or some other red.

The spine isn’t just the “long side of a book”, it’s the side where all the pages are bound together. (Note that the opposite side is just as long, but it’s not a “spine”.) And calling the spine a “side” of a book sounds odd. Typically you’d describe the front and back as the two sides of a book.
