He think he was or he think he is?

I was watching adventure time short video about bmo talking to marceline and he found mordecai (blue jay) screaming woaaaaaah and it has one scene that bmo said "he thinks his name was ted" personally i think the answer should be i think he is because it's in present (or maybe i just misheard idk)

Depends. "He thinks his name is Ted" means that he currently believes that his name is Ted. "He thinks his name was Ted" means that he currently believes that his name used to be Ted, but also that his name is no longer Ted. "He thought his name was Ted" means that he used to believe that his name was Ted, but he doesn't believe that anymore.

He thinks he is… He thinks he was… As long as it’s thinks (instead of think), both are grammatically, correct. Context and meaning will determine which one to use in a situation.
