それが違います definitely sounds way too formal wwwww. I think your English is great for being self-taught, and learning in the US will certainly help with improving your fluency. It’s difficult but making more small talk might help, since you’ll be able to point out irregularities in speech a lot easier (including your own choice of words!). Leverage the opportunities you have in college to use English more frequently, and you’ll get better at conversational English in no time. 頑張ってね!!

I think it’d be very difficult for just about anyone to grasp a second language quite as well as their native language, English or otherwise…. Or at least not without years and years of exposure to and immersion in the second language.

Whereas your native language appears to be Japanese… I doubt it will ever be as easy to understand English as well as your native tongue. To truly be bilingual in such different languages, requires beginning at a much earlier age. I lived in Korea for two years and spoke Korean the whole time I was there. English is my native language. Even after two years of intensive study and practice… I was far from fluent. I would likely have needed another decade living there to get anywhere close to fluency… And that is OK. This is not a reflection on you or your abilities.
