But even that seems, I dunno, too formal.

"He was looking for the wallet..."
"He was searching for the wallet..."

“Sought” would be the correct choice, but it’s a strange verb to use in that sentence. We tend to use “seek” or “sought” for things that aren’t physical objects (though that isn’t always the case).

Neither. No native English speaker would say that.
Either:
He looked for the wallet in his pocket.
He searched for the wallet in his pocket.
would work for me, so I would guess that the correct answer would be "sought for", but I'm not sure. (And maybe there is a difference between US and UK English, I'm British.)

That is a really odd use of the word sought. I would understand, but… no English speaker would ever actually say it.
