My student says he smoked six puffs this New Year's and got wasted. I want to check if "smoke" goes well with "puff" here, or is it something else? Thanks and Happy New Year!

Verb and noun
"I saw him puffing on a cigarette" / " I took a few puffs and it made me feel sick"

"six puffs" is a normal way to say that.
So is "drags/draws/tokes/pulls." Theres lots of ways to describe the action of inhaling smoke from a fag or joint.

I’d also like to add “wasted” is usually only referring to being under the effects of alcohol, not being high on any sort of drug. “Smoked six puffs and got wasted” sounds like someone whose never touched a drug in their life

That's pretty honest. Most students wouldn't be so open about their use of intoxicants.

To puff is also a verb. One could say: "I only puffed on the joint six times and I got really stoned"
Otherwise, I think it's "take a puff"

You wouldn't smoke a puff. The object of smoke has to be something like cigarette or pipe or whatever. Drug talk is very regional, but around here we'd say saomething like "I took six hits this New Year's and was high as a kite!" We don't use puff usually in that context, but it would be understandable to say "took six puffs from the pipe" or whatever.

Unless the vernacular has changed, the act of taking a hit of pot is taking a toke. Puff would be used by a non-smoker.

I've only heard puff in the singular, or as in "puff puff pass."
Generally, someone would say they "took six hits" or "six tokes" when they "smoked," and got "high."
As others have said, "wasted" is reserved for alcohol. A similar term for weed would be that they "greened out."

I take a toke
And all my cares
go up in smoke.
Not for me. What I get is dread. It's like waking up in the "upside down" from Stranger Things.
I tried alcohol, but that uncages rage I never knew I had.
Hell is locked away in my mind, drugs let out bits of it for a little while.

I’d say “take a puff”

Yes.
"had six puffs" is also fine.
Or "took six puffs".
