A hypnotist is a person who practices hypnosis. Therefore, the mother “had” one that she went to for help.

I hear it.

It's definitely 'hypnotist'. 'Hypnosis' has the emphasis on the second syllable, so you'd hear a clear 'o' vowel rather than a schwa.
'who helped' runs together and the 'l' in helped isn't very distinct.
culdusaq•
Yes. The "who helped" part is very rushed but that's definitely what she said.
AlternativeMinute289•
It's correct, though I don't blame you for missing it because it is very rushed together. It's more like... "hipnotis' 'ooelpeder quit" this is a common to the PNW accent in the USA. We tend to drop those harder consonants at the end of words, particularly deleting [t] or replacing it with a glottal stop, and slide right into the middle of the next word.
Evil_Weevill•
Yeah, definitely saying "hypnotist"
creature-crossing•
Yes, "hypnotist" is correct. The speaker doesn't articulate the "t" sounds very clearly, but the stressed syllable helps. In "hypnosis," the second syllable would be more stressed (hyp-NO-sis)
Mindless_Whereas_280•
Yes, it's correct. She's speaking very fast with everything after "Mother" being strung together. "Who helped her" is coming out like "who-elpder".
BLAZEISONFIRE006•
She is mumbling a little.
Don't stress over this one.
DemythologizedDie•
She doesn't enunciate particularly well so she slurs the "t" at the end.
zebostoneleigh•
The subtitle seems correct.
WhirlwindTobias•
It's correct. Enunciation on native speech can get so poor even native speakers need subtitles from time to time. Not to mention changes in audio recording equipment. There's a good video about it on YT, just search "Why we all need subtitles now".
SnooDonuts6494•
The subtitles are correct.
It's not very clear - she's speaking quickly, and there's background noise - but that is indeed what she says. "My mother had a hypnotist who helped her quit smoking".
Kinda like "tis-too-elpt-er"
Watching her lips helps.

Hello, slightly off topic, but could anyone please tell me how to post videos on this sub? I have questions regarding pronunciation but can't post videos.
Thanks.
