I’m doubting if the answer GPT given is natural

I’m doubting if the answer GPT given is natural

Today I learned new phrase come/go with the territory. To test whether I validly grasp its usage, I made a sentence with this phrase “ using the internet comes with the territory of risking leaking your private information” but it gave me a refined version replacing “leaking “with “exposure of “which comes off a bit weird to me. I remember it’s highlighted “ wherever possible, use verb than noun to avoid redundancy” in many grammar books. How come gpt thought it’d be more natural to use a noun here?

I would suggest this is backwards. I would more likely use "Risking exposure of your private information comes with the territory of using the internet." I'm not really sure this is an actual use case where I'd phrase it this way, but "with the territory of.." should lead on to the thing you're doing, in this case using the internet, with the consequence preceding it. There may be regional variances in how this phrase is used. I wouldn't consider it a super common phrase.

ChatGPT is terrible for this. Do not use it to learn. This is flatly incorrect.

I don't know, but neither of them are very natural. I hear "comes with the territory" most often as a stand alone phrase. Examples: I'm an Amazon delivery driver and work 60 hours a week. (It) comes with the territory. I have two small children and haven't had a good night's sleep in 3 years. Comes with the territory. You could also say "Working 60 hours a week comes with the territory when you're an Amazon delivery driver" or "Lack of sleep comes with the territory when you have small children". Those sound fine. Specifically to your example, I would say "Leaks of private information come with the territory when you use the Internet." Except I don't think I would. I don't know why. Sorry that's unhelpful. “When using the internet, the risk of exposing your private information comes with the territory.”

you don’t typically “leak” your own information. leaking is often intentional. for example, someone might “leak” someone else’s address, password, etc. i guess it’s possible to leak your own information, but i think exposing your information fits here. leaking would make more sense to me if it was “someone leaking your private information.” either way, the sentence should be “risking (someone) leaking your information comes with the territory of using the internet.” the risk is a result of using the internet, not the other way around. so it “comes with the territory” of using the internet.

To clarify: the idiom in question is used like: "(undesirable effect - data breach) comes with the territory." You frequently hear it end there, unless you want to specify "the territory of/with (some contextual element - internet use)." It's often clear what metaphorical or literal territory is being referred to. You would not say "(context) comes with the territory of (undesirable effect)," that is backwards and the result of the AI hallucinating. It's a useful exercise in critical thinking, but in general I'd say it's a poor tool for language learning

I'll add to the chorus of people saying don't ask chat GPT this type of question. It's a waste of time. FWIW in this specific instance you are right to not trust it.

"Using the internet comes with the risk of exposing your private information." I fail find a way to naturally incorporate "comes with the territory" into this phrase. Usually, "that comes with the territory" is used by itself when the context is known. "I’m having trouble finding ways to keep my information private online." "Yeah, that just comes with the territory."

Using the internet comes with the risk of exposing your private information. or, as others have stated, it's more natural if it's the other order around: A risk of exposing your private information comes with using the internet. ==== comes with the territory is not usually followed by "of." The territory is usually already established by the time someone says, "It comes with the territory." For instance: "What about using the internet? Is there a risk of exposing my information?" "Yes, it comes with the territory."

This is… complicated because that isn’t entirely wrong. It’s just a very flowery way of saying it. It’s too formal. I would say Using the internet comes with the risk of exposing your private information. Slight variation on the sentence but is more likely to be accepted in native English speaking circles. What ChatGPT wrote makes sense but like I said it’s too formal. “Comes with the territory of” are you from Buckingham palace? What kind of craziness is this? Using territory here is understandable but it makes you sound way too high class and uptight for normal conversation. Just say something simpler and it’ll be fine. The thing here is that this is a very common problem with ChatGPT it produces notably formal and flowery language that is almost always indicative of an AI. You can instantly tell that an ai wrote something by checking a few things and this happens to be one of them. Im not in the position to accurately explain why It does this but I have a feeling that it has to do with something called AI inbreeding where an AI samples AI generated content and trains off of it. This can very quickly spiral into broken LLMs and hallucinatory responses but in small doses can likely cause small changes to language usage. Again I’d ask an expert but this seems like a likely explanation to me as to why it makes this strange stuff to begin with. Use ChatGPT with caution it is VERY often VERY WRONG. And OpenAI knows this and has disclaimers about it.

wow, file this one under "why you should never trust chat GPT with your English learning." this isn't just unnatural, this is unintelligible nonsense.
