“I rarely come here. My habitat is mostly the west side of city.” Can we say this jokingly?

I feel like if you just say "habitat", it feels weird, but not weird enough to be recognized as a joke. I would say "natural habitat", which is a phrase that is strongly associated with wild animals and nature documentaries. 🙃

Jokingly? Sure, but when you make a joke you can do all sorts of weird things. Habitat (for a human) is usually a referencing a single abode (a home, an apartment, a tent, a hotel, etc...). To claim the west side of a city as one's habitat is odd, but funny. It's kind of like how I claim that my massive sea shell collection is spread on beaches all over the world. Or maybe like a king claiming that every single home in his land is his home. What you mean by the joke would definitely depend on context. On it's own the sentence is strange.

It would be a quite quirky joke, as habitat is quite scientific sounding. When I hear habitat I think of little scurrying animals on a documentary. If that is what you are going for and it suits your personality could be quite funny. It would be slightly more common to say something like “I only hang out in the West side of the city” or “The West side of the city is my stomping ground”. You could use “territory” instead of habitat to have the animal meaning without it sounding scientific.

In addition to what everyone else has said instead of habitat to sound more natural/incorporate some slang you could say something like: "My stomping grounds are on the west side of town."

Even jokingly, I'd normally connect 'habitat' to a type of location, rather than to an generic area. For instance, I could say that dive bars are my natural habitat, comparing myself to a creature that thrives in that kind of environment ;). If I were talking about a neighbourhood, I'd rather call it my turf or my hunting grounds. Assuming I'm determined to sound like an extra sketchy party animal-gangster hybrid. Native speakers, does it make sense to you?

well, i think it's funny. edit: we also have a saying like this in english already. 'my stomping ground', used the same way, is a lighthearted way to refer to your familiar territory. e.g. 'oh, northwest mall, that's my old stomping ground.'

Yeah, you can totally 'anthropomorphize' animal concepts to human language. Not everything works, of course, and the audience matters, but for example, I might talk about: *"No, I haven't been to that new pizza place, my territory doesn't go north of 36th street."* *"Oh look, hipsters, and in their natural habitat!"* *"I can't go now, it's time for my feeding."* And so on...
