I would probably call this a ‘check engine light’ or just ‘engine light.’ For your sentence I’d say ‘my check engine light was off for a while but it came back on yesterday.’ I’m in Australia.

It's a light, so you'd use "off" and "on".

American English- we'd just say "the maintenance light came on again"
