I learned the phrase “[something] is not in my 2024 bingo card” about 7 months ago.

But only recently I discovered that the phrase is cringy or tacky. How so?

It's a recent phrase but was heavily over-used by online communities in a short amount of time. It quickly went from sounding clever or fresh to sounding like the opposite of those.

I’ll warn you that “cringey” is far more cringeworthy than the bingo card phrase.

It's a meme, like all memes they spread and get used more and more until they become less funny, then they become completely unfunny and cringey. It's the lifecycle I guess. The reason you've only just found out it's cringey is because it was a lot less cringey 7 months ago.

It's one of those memes or jokes that gets overused or used clumsily by people who post or tweet a lot. The original idea of a bingo card for what happens in a year is pretty funny, but it's hard to actually make a funny joke out of it. Often the [something] is so specific that it never would have been on anyone's bingo card ("Flavor Flav Steps Up to Bankroll United States Water Polo Team's Entire Trip to Paris Olympics") or so vague or obvious that you just look like a bad bingo card maker for leaving it out ("Trump did something idiotic").

It’s not a common phrase. I’m 55, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard it used. I’ve heard a variation, it’s not in the cards, in reference to tarot ( cards some use to tell the future). A Bingo card has 25 squares possible. If someone used your phrase, I’d think that the person saying that thought [something] wasn’t even a possibility to happen with 5 months left in the year. Not cringy or tacky, I’d think the person wasn’t optimistic enough.

I wouldn't say it is tacky, but it certainly has become overused and tired, so use it sparingly.

I wouldn't say cringey or tacky, just overused.

Hold onto that one for something truly strange for maximum effect. Don’t over use it.

Not cringy or tacky to me. Just a humorous way to say an event was totally unexpected.

It could be seen as cringy/tacky because it’s a cliché- that is, an overused metaphor/saying.

Depends on the context. If you're using it conversationally among friends, it's fine. If you're putting it in an email to your boss, that could definitely be tacky.

Hmm. I would only use in a somewhat sarcastic joking situation, but I don’t consider it very cringy or tacky. I wouldn’t use it a lot. Might heavily depend on context.
