Does a T-shirt with words like that look weird to a native speaker

I've seen some "strange English on clothes" meme so I'm curious. for example, this outfit literally has a picture of a landscape tagged with its name and address. Is that weird? I also had a hoodie that I realized the picture on it was just a map of all rivers in a certain part of the United States with some village names on it... I had never noticed the English on my clothes before I planned to visit an English-speaking country. I've already picked out a lot of clothes that I absolutely can't wear because some of them literally have stuff like 'Turn into a werewolf' written on them, which is really cringe lol.

The Rocky Mountains are a real thing, they're in Colorado, a real place. Nothing is odd or out of place here. Something like this would be sold pretty much anywhere in Colorado and nobody would bat an eye. There's nothing particularly interesting about the font either. What's wrong with your "turn into a werewolf" shirt? People wear ironic/kitschy/hipster t-shirts all day long here, and that doesn't sound particularly offbeat. C'mon let's rate your whole wardrobe here.

Almost all of my t-shirts have words on them. I think I have ?3? plain black t-shirts? Wearing shirts with words on them is incredibly normal here. Even shirts that say stuff that doesn't seem to make sense - most people will assume it's some sort of in-joke or reference to a specific movie/book/video game that they just don't know. People would likely think that "Turn into a werewolf" is a reference to something specific, depending on font and/or picture, rather than just a cringe suggestion that people should wolf out.

Words on t-shirts and hoodies are very normal here. I am currently wearing one with the name of a city in my state. The “Turn into a werewolf” shirt could be amazing or terrible. Depends what else is on it. I think a map of rivers would be fun. Some people would call it nerdy. The only real exception to “shirts with words” is they do not work in formal situations. Or for office work unless it’s a company logo.

No, we like shirts with locations for some reason. I actually have a colorado shirt too lol

Not a native speaker *but* what is funny is when the t-shirt is written in broken English. Nonsensical sentences or bad spelling, or grammar that does not work. They often come from asia. Same thing like the bad video game translations in the past. You know... "*All your base are belong to us*" kind of thing
OtterDev101
not really?

Thanks for all the comments! I guess I'm too introverted and humorless. I'll bring the werewolf one ; )

There are a lot weirder things that could be on a t-shirt than just a random place name. I’m in the UK and I once saw a man wearing a t-shirt that just said “ARMLEY, it’s near the prison” (HMP Leeds is in Armley).

I wanna see this “Turn into a werewolf” shirt lol. In the right context I’d wear that.
StupidLemonEater
This one looks like a perfectly normal souvenir t-shirt to me.

I would absolutely wear a t shirt that says "turn into a werewolf". That's amazing. I'm wearing a hoodie with the name of the college my sister went to for one year.
Damn_Vegetables
No, this is perfect English
eggpotion
It's normal This reminds me of people who get tattoos in Chinese or Japanese or Korean or Russian or Arabic or hebrew or some script that looks cool and then it just has some random ass word like "noodles" or "gust of wind"
MarsMonkey88
No, that’s an extremely normal shirt.
DeviatedPreversions
No, just bland.
Imightbeafanofthis
They annoy me. Almost every t-shirt with words on it is an advertisement for some product or location.
Forever_Ev
I have a shirt just like that and it's very normal especially because I lived in the rockys for years

In this case it's in a whole genre of souvenir t shirts, to the point of there being a joke version "i went to (place) and all i got was this lousy tshirt" In this case there are mountains in colorado called The Rocky Mountains (so in this case a proper boy , despite the fact that "the rocky mountains" to describe some mountain you know that has a lot of rocks on it is also a valid construction) Also the area was named by the spanish and "coloured rocks" translates to roca coloreada so guess why it's called Colorado. Names in america are just kinda goofy like that, although I can't talk given I'm canadian and we have the town of dildo.
fizzile
I wear shirts like that, completely normal.

The only weirdness I see is you referring to places in the United States as "villages". Can't say I have ever heard of a place here being called a "village", unless the name of the place has "village" in it. Town is probably the right word for the shirt you mentioned. There are a lot of "thing, place name" shirts in USA. It isn't strange to see them at all. I would want to see the werewolf shirt before saying one way or the other if it is "cringe" to a native speaker, context is important.

Good

This is a normal tourist t-shirt. I have a cap that says, "Las Vegas, Nevada," from last summer's trip there. It's the same concept as the shirts.
AccomplishedAd7992
nope. average target tshirt
Particular-Move-3860
Totally normal. I wear shirts with similar prints on the front. The image and text on this shirt are nicely done. The text is appropriate for the image and the shirt. Americans wear casual shirts like this.

"Rocky Mountains – Colorado" looks perfectly normal to me. When I was in Tokyo, though, I saw a t-shirt in a trendy boutique that said "California – Modesto" on it. That made me laugh uncontrollably, because Modesto, California, is the polar opposite of fashionable! I personally love t-shirts with weird and/or ungrammatical English on them. I wanted to buy more when I was in Japan, but most of the ones that I found were either too expensive or too small for me.

This is fine. The sort of stuff you're worried about turns up on this (somewhat dubiously-named site) [https://engrish.com/](https://engrish.com/) EDIT: More specifically [https://engrish.com/category/clothing/](https://engrish.com/category/clothing/)

There is only really one kind of shirt you shouldn't wear if you don't want to stand out in a somewhat bad way. These are shirts that have random suddenly explicit or strange words in nice font. Like I once saw someone hiking in a T-Shirt that said anal in all caps, and that was it. Those types of shirts I feel are the equivalent of Americans getting tattoos in foreign languages that they ran through google translate. If you want to fly completely under the radar, band tees can be controversial if you don't actually know the band. Most people know that people buy t-shirts for how they look, but you might get asked if you like the music. In North America at least, shirts like the werewolf shirt you mentioned are sometimes in demand. We have embraced the cringe shirt, and it's become its own fashion statement. Like the band T's someone might comment, but it probably won't be out of place.
king-of-new_york
It's weirder if the picture and the words don't match, like if it was a picture of the beach and it said "Rocky Mountains, Colorado"

Yeah that looks like a normal shirt. I wouldn't think twice.
illyria817
It's totally normal. I'm a Coloradan, and I would wear it. We love our mountains :)
Easy_Philosopher8987
Awesome t-shirt, the English writing on it is good.
Captain_QueefAss
No. The Rocky Mountains are simply a mountain chain in the western United States. There is nothing wrong with this t-shirt.
Traditional_Fuel2821
the most not normal thing about this is how perfectly rectangular the image is
KillHitlerAgain
no. this is a normal t-shirt
SteampunkExplorer
That's a perfectly normal shirt of the type that American tourists buy while visiting far away parts of America. 🙂 I have a couple like this, and they're always my favorites. (Also, the werewolf shirt sounds fun.)
truelovealwayswins
no address but that would be fine too, it’s just a place name with an image of a place there, totally normal shirt
