When talking about South Florida, do people generally abbreviate it to SF or do they say write it out fully? I think it'd get mistaken for San Francisco but I'm not sure

Pretty sure people use SoFlo from previous reddit threads. Maybe ask on r/southflorida

It would likely be mistaken for San Francisco.

Lived in South Florida my whole life, if you said SF, I’d assume you’re talking about San Francisco. Others are correct in saying SoFlo is used.

I've seen SoFlo a few times in the past, never seen SF for South Florida

If you said SF without context I would assume San Francisco. S. FL, South FL, or S. Florida is how I would shorten it if needed. I would write it out most likely I think. I never have a reason to talk about this specific region so I wouldn’t know. Otherwise, It might be more useful to refer to the nearest major city, in this case Miami. You could say the Miami metropolitan area or just the Miami Area

Maybe if you’ve made a precedent that what you’re talking about is south Florida “Blah blah blah south Florida. Blah blah blah, that’s what they have in SF”

Disclaimer that I live in the Bay Area and was raised here, so I'm biased. SF is San Francisco and I'd get confused if you meant anywhere else unless you clarified it. As others have said, I've seen SoFlo to refer to southern Florida.
