Hard to understand words in musics

EaseOk1190
I'm learning English, and in normal conversations, I can understand the words pretty well, but today I realized that I can't understand songs. I was listening to a song that I used to hear when I was a teenager in NFSMW (Skinnyman - Static-X), and out of curiosity, I searched for the lyrics. And damn, I realized that I did not understand a single word without the subtitles. Is that normal? Do you guys also have trouble understanding lyrics without subtitles?

It's hard for native speakers too. We often can't understand the words in songs. That's normal.

Yep, especially as you get into heavier music it’s normal.

Title correction: Music is a mass noun and is uncountable, so you can’t say “musics”. You can instead say “pieces of music” or “songs”

It’s normal in nearly every genre of music. Is it not normal in your native language? Do you usually hear and understand every word?

Sometimes lyrics will have a pun that even native speakers will have to puzzle out if they don't have a lyric sheet. The lyrics to the Braid song "Consolation Prizefighter" has one line that *sounds* like "One two few in one two many." It might take a couple guesses to figure out what homophones the writer (who is describing himself as a failed boxer) actually intended.

this is common in multiple languages. often songs don’t follow typical speech patterns and intonations to favor the pace and melody of the music itself, so it’s quite common to not recognize words you otherwise wouldn’t. even native speakers don’t understand some songs without looking up the lyrics, so you’re just fine

I listen to a lot of heavy metal, and to my ear I would say Wayne Static is relatively easy to understand. One thing that can make it more difficult is that, in the specific opening lyric you are talking about, he is using a common singing technique called "vowel modification". Basically how it works is that certain vowel sounds are easier to sing than others. I hear the word "girl", but I hear it being pronounced like "garl", which the singer may he doing (consciously or unconsciously) because the "ar" sound is easier to sing than the "ir" sound.

I’m a native English speaker and I can never understand a damn thing in songs. I just listen for the actual music. This is perfectly normal.

A friend of mine, also a native speaker, thought "don't go chasing waterfalls" was "go go Jason Waterfalls." So, yes, this is normal for us all. Lol

I favor music with lyrics I can understand. Love musicals and operettas!

Definetly. I'm not native but I believe I have a pretty high level, yet is really hard to completely understand with just listening the first time. Some songs have complicated words, they are too fast, the verse depends to much on context, or sometimes the pronunciation can change to make it rhyme or sound more consistent, which doesn't really make it incorrect, (that's actually the reason english is one of the easiest languages to write songs with). I personaly love seaching for the lyrics, then the translation, and sometimes, I make my own translations, sometimes just text, sometimes I make videos. I've actually learned a lot by making my own translations, since I search for difficult expressions or phrases myself, rather than what the auto-translates gives, which is very innacurate sometimes (although i do recommend deepL , that one is way better that google translate, at least to spanish).

It’s so common, there’s an entire website about it. https://www.kissthisguy.com/

I sometimes do, and it got a bit easier after I started writing song lyrics myself. Slowing down the song sometimes helps too! :)

Something I love about Aimee Mann is that her lyrics are brilliant and clear to hear. If you want to practice listening to song lyrics, she's a great place to start.

P.S. I've been listening to a lot of Italian opera recently. I can't understand a single word, but I still like it.

Out of curiosity, is it easy to understand all the words the first time you hear a song in your native language?
