Can we still use the word "tweet" now that Twitter has been rebranded as X?

lernerzhang123
If not, what should we call a post/entry on X? Simply a post?

Yeah, basically no one I know calls it X
glassocto
You can still use tweet. Everyone I know still calls it twitter/tweeting and does not acknowledge the rebrand. Post is also acceptable but it wouldn't be exclusive to twitter in the same way tweeting is.

It's most often referred to as "Twitter" and the things sent as "tweets." I recommend doing so as well.

I don't think the site calls it that internally anymore but the English-speaking world has been slow to adopt the name change (I personally refuse to call it X out of spite), so I think most people still call them tweets. The proper word, I think, is posts.

Elon musk is a evil idiot. It’s still Twitter in my books. It’s still tweeting. But nobody should use the platform because he owns it

- ew don't use that site - yes, pretty much all the language around Twitter has remained the same, including tweeting, tweet, retweet, etc. occasionally people will call the platform itself "X," but most people just stick to "twitter."
JackRabbit-
Yes, because fuck Musk You're correct that in general use they are colled "posts" though, like on bluesky, reddit, discord, facebook, etc.
JackEmptiness
The correct name of this site is Shitter therefore tweets should be called shits.
ElephantNo3640
I have seen “Xweet” used. Pretty amusing.
GilderoyRockhard
Everyone I know still calls it Twitter and still calls posts Tweets. Everyone I know has also left twitter though, so I have no insight on the verbage of people still swimming in that cesspool
Ok-Replacement-2738
Yep, same way we'd still use google as a verb even if Google vanished.
stink3rb3lle
I much prefer to call it "Xeet," with a "sh" sound for the X.
hiirogen
The only thing I’m 100% comfortable deadnaming is twitter
AlrightIFinallyCaved
You absolutely can, for three reasons: 1) everyone will know exactly what you're talking about. 2) everyone else does. It's the word we all learned for posting to that particular social media site. 3) it'll annoy the shit out of Elon, which is always worth doing.
matthewsmugmanager
It's now called a Xit, as in what you take on the Xitter.
Fit-Share-284
Yes. It'll always be Twitter and tweets for me as well as most people I know.
Tykero
Just like when prince renamed himself to that symbol and everyone just refer to them as the artist formerly known as prince people still refer to them as tweets or some acknowledgement to the same effect.
tessharagai_
I still say tweet and twitter
JustAskingQuestionsL
Almost everyone still says “Tweet” and “Twitter.”
ScreamingVoid14
While the site has brand guidelines, there are still a lot of people calling it "Twitter" and the posts "tweets." Some other people have started using "X" and "Xhits" as a derogatory form (the "Xhits" would be pronounced "shits"). So... it's all up in the air. People will generally understand "Twitter" and "Tweets". "X" and "posts" would be more formal and accurate. The other options would be for people who don't like the rename.
Firespark7
Everyone still calls it Twitter and a Tweet, but Elon Goebbels wants people to call the medium X and a post an X.
SoggyWotsits
It’ll still get called Twitter by the generation who knew it as Twitter. If it’s still going by then, the next generation will call it X. It’s like Ulay/Olay face cream. Those who don’t remember the change only know it as Olay. Also Cif cleaning products that used to be called Jif.
Ok_Television9820
I call them Xits, and the site Xitter. That’s clearly what Elon wanted, so let him have it.
DazzlingClassic185
Yes. Especially if it annoys Elon.
igotshadowbaned
For the most part people still call it Twitter and tweeting I only see it called X when it's being referred to formally (like in the news) or by people who are hyper fans of the owner.
BallsIsBack76
No you Ext.
MeepleMerson
Yes, though you can also call say “xit” (the ‘x’ is pronounced as the English ‘sh’ sound): “Elon xits a lot.” “I saw a xit that said not buying Teslas was illegal.” “Grandpa’s on the Xitter, owning libs.”
fjgwey
Barely anybody calls it X because people are too used to the name Twitter and also dislike the name X itself alongside its association with Elon Musk. The only times it will be referred to as X unironically is by fans of Elon Musk or by news orgs who will still write "formerly Twitter" after it.
CatRyBou
It’s still Twitter and a tweet to me. If you want, you can call then Xitter and the posts Xits, with the X being pronounced with a “sh” sound.
fourthfloorgreg
I like the Hank Green terminology: A "tweet" is a short-form text-based social media post. There are several social media networks on which one can tweet. One of these networks, Twitter, is owned by a company called X.
Wabbit65
Perhaps call it Xitter (pronouncing the X as "sh" like in Chinese transcription). And the item or action being Xit.
porqueboomer
You’ll have to tear my tweets from my cold, dead hands.
Zardozin
I do, I still call it twitter too Fuck him trying to trademark a fucking letter.
Fibijean
According to the people behind the rebrand, the platform should be called X and the posts should be called posts. However, many people have decided to ignore this guidance, typically due to dislike/contempt for the rebrand and the people behind it. Twitter and tweeting were such widely understood (and, in many people's opinions, superior) terms that they're still in popular usage, and you should be able to continue using them and be understood without a problem. I guess just be aware that some people who are big fans of the rebrand and/or the people behind it might get upset with you for doing so - but most normal people won't care either way.
itanpiuco2020
still in the dictionary so it is still good and understandable.
_MapleMaple_
Officially I believe they are called zeets/xeets
FiddleThruTheFlowers
I only see it actually called X by news media. Even then, it's usually "X (formerly known as Twitter)." Pretty much everyone still calls it Twitter, and even the people who want to correct you will know what website you're talking about. I'll sometimes see people say Xitter in text. I don't know what the official term for a post on Twitter/X is now, but people will know that you're specifically referring to a post on Twitter/X if you say "tweet." "Post" would work for any social media site, including X/Twitter.
Comprehensive-Tiger5
If your worried call them post
PiasaChimera
if you are writing a news article that needs ad revenue -- "post on x, formally known as twitter". otherwise "tweet".
RedMaij
Who cares about the rebrand? It’s Twitter and Tweet for any who’s not a Musk sycophant. If I see someone calling it X I just assume they’re a MAGA person. (Trying so hard to not rant in this sub! Lol)
