size of animal shit

size of animal shit

Agitated_Grape_3247
In English, we often compare something to animal shit to insult it, but is there a grammatical distinction between dog shit, horse shit, and bull shit etc.? Can we create new abusive expressions based on those ? for example, rabbit poop or elephant poop?

There are some distinctions. For example, "bullshit" is really obvious and brazen lies, but "dogshit" is really low quality. "Horse shit" can kind of be either of those. "Batshit" means insane/crazy. "Apeshit" means violently aggressive. I'm sure there are others I can't think of right now.

Bull shit usually means that something is a lie. Although it can also just mean something is bad. The size of the animal doesn’t really mean anything.

- Bullshit is a lie - Horseshit is nonsense - Dogshit is low quality - Apeshit means violent - Batshit means crazy - Chickenshit is cowardly

You can search the meanings of these online, they're well defined; creating something new means no one will know what you mean: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/ifunny--457889487130235084/

Good question. Based on my experience, there's really no significant semantic difference between horsesht, and bullsht. As another poster mentioned, "Dogsht" tends to imply low quality rather than nonsense or something being a lie. The only real difference I _might_ potentially perceive is that "Horse" is slightly stronger than "Bull", simply because "Bull" is the most common and kind of "the default", so using "Horse" seems intense by comparison. You could theoretically insert any animal like "rabbit" or "cat", though pretty much no one would use those so you might get some weird looks (I imagine if you said "mouse sht, for instance, it could insinuate that it's a small problem, which is probably not what you want to convey). I dunno why it's mostly limited to those three animals. Maybe we humans just either tend to hold them in low regard (dog, bull), or just produce large fecal matters (horse). Also worth noting that all three are commonly domesticated, which is probably why they're the most common (and hence why, say, elephant sht isn't really common despite them making the biggest feces of any land mammal). EDIT: Oh yeah, "apesht", "batsht" and "chickensht" are also things, though ape and bat have a different connotation (going insane/crazy).

It's not about the size, it's more about the quality. Chickens are cowardly, so calling someone a chicken shit is also calling them cowardly. "Dog" related adjectives sometimes can mean "poor quality", so "dogshit" also means poor quality. Bats are associated with insanity ("batty", "bats in the belfry"), so batshit means crazy. Apes can go into murderous rages, so "apeshit" means crazy with a side of rage. There are lots of lists out there explaining what all these mean; I'm sure someone has a good link someplace. As far as coining new versions: sure, anybody can try to make up a new saying, but people may ask to stop trying to make "Fetch" happen. (Reference to the movie Mean Girls, where a character is trying to start up a new slang term.) I'd suggest one with positive connotations. How about "his memory is elephant shit! This guy never forgets anything!" Or "the newlyweds got on like rabbit shit, as the saying goes, and in a few years had a lively house full of children".

They all have different meanings and connotations. “Bullshit” and “horseshit” both mean nonsense with a very negative connotation, like it’s a lie, or it makes zero sense, or it’s stupid and senseless behavior. “Dogshit” is insulting and vulgar, and means something is very bad. “Bullshit” is vulgar, but it’s okay to say “BS” in most situations, like students and teachers say it in school in the US, where we tend to be very uptight about profanity. “Horseshit” is a bit more profane and vulgar. “Dogshit” is the most offensive of the bunch. As far as grammar - Bullshit can be a noun, verb, or adjective. So can “BS.” I’ve only heard “horseshit” or “dogshit” used as adjectives and nouns, never as verbs. I’m sure this is available in a dictionary somewhere, lmao. They’re all established figures of speech, and the meanings have nothing to do with the size of the animal or the volume of its feces. If you say something is “rabbit poop,” or “elephant poop,” then people are just going to think you’re trying to say something funny, and will be confused, maybe wondering if it’s a meme they don’t recognize. They’re not going to automatically infer “oh, they mean it’s slightly bad, like bullshit but less serious, because they compared it to the poop of a smaller animal” or “oh, they think this is worse than horseshit, because elephants are bigger than horses.”

You can also ‘bullshit’ a school assignment by doing it quickly and badly and basically making it up hoping for the best

It is very interesting that English speakers give different meanings to animal shit for each animal.

"Bullshit" = something extremely untrue or absurd, usually referring to words. If someone tells an obvious lie, someone else might respond, "that's bullshit!" "Dogshit" = something of extremely poor quality. "Batshit" = insane or out of control, usually refers to someone's behavior. If someone's screaming and attacking people in public, you can say they "went batshit." You can also say "They're batshit crazy/insane." "Chickenshit" = contemptible or cowardly, usually refers to a person. "Horseshit" = less common, the same as "bullshit" "Shit" = can be used as an expletive, a neutral vulgar synonym for "stuff," or a negative synonym for "stuff." Also can just refer to regular poop. Can also be a verb, "I'm going to shit," or "I'm gonna take a shit." (same meaning) All of these can be used both as adjectives or nouns. They are rarely plural. And of course, all of them are vulgar and not appropriate in some circumstances.

Bullshit is the most common, it means something is a total lie. "going apeshit" or"apeshit crazy" means going violently insane and aggressive. Dogshit is low quality, horseshit just means it sucks. Chickenshit isn't used as much anymore, but it used to be slang for something infuriating but unimportant.

- “dogshit” means bad - “bullshit” can be used when you don’t believe something. or can be for something that’s a sham - “apeshit” is acting crazy/wild. like very physically hyper and can be used negatively in regards to aggression
