Maybes4
Hey guys, im not a native but need to have an english name because im gonna work for multinational corp. Normally, they would take some common names like "cherry, philip, mike,..." but to me these are pretty boring and i wanna a cooler, less familiar name. Im thinking of "Maybe". This name sounds cool to me but im worrying natives might be confusing So how weird sound weird to you. In real life i have seen some other strange names such as "Drinkwater, Booty,..."

Are you insecure of your birth name or something? Just use your name. Trust me, nobody cares nearly as much as you think. If it's really that bad, then maybe alter it a little to sound like an English name to account for pronunciation etc. But if your goal is a cool and less familiar name, then "Maybe" is the pretty bad. It sounds childish considering it's a name you choose yourself as oppose to the one you're born with. And obviously it's confusing as hell too. Don't chase cool names, in short.

>common names like "cherry, Not common. >i have seen some other strange names such as "Drinkwater, Booty,..." Those would be embarrassing to a native speaker and would tip any native speaker off that you are not a native speaker. Maybe is also not a good name. I agree with others, Mae or Mabel.

Drinkwater and Booty are surnames, not given names. The sorts of words that are used for surnames are different from the sorts of words people use for given names. I think most of the time when people pick an English name for work or for class, they keep their original surname.

please do not choose weird names, stick with normal names... especially for a multinational corp

Why do you need an English name to work for a multinational corporation? Makes me think you're gonna be working as a "Steve from Microsoft support" scammer or something. If it's a serious company you should be fine with your actual name.

do NOT do this oh my god. Every time you tell someone your name they’ll say “Maybe what?” there are plenty of less-common names you can choose
Evil_Weevill
"Maybe" would definitely cause confusion as a name.

Think about how the name “Maybe” would sound in your L1 (is it Vietnamese? Có lẽ?) and the types of confusing scenarios it would cause. If you’re OK with that, then go for it.
Mysterious_Artist219
Yes. It also might get confusing since “maybe” is a pretty common word. Maggie, May/Mae, and Mabel are all more standard names if you want something with a similar sound.

I get wanting something relatively unusual, but picking random words is weird. Go to a baby name site, sort by English and popularity, and then scroll down to the less popular ones. Don't try too hard to be different, because you'll end up as a joke.

No.

[Popular names in the US](https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/) Don't try to make one up.

Cherry is not a common name. Maybe would be extremely confusing, and even if it was fun at first, it would very quickly become annoying. Drinkwater sounds like a joke, and Booty sounds like a stripper.

If you want a less familiar name that wouldn't sound weird to native speakers, I'd suggest looking up the name popularity list for your birth year in an English-speaking country and pick a name that is outside the top 100. You can find the stats for the US [here](https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/). Please don't pick "Maybe". It would cause so much confusion among English speakers and doesn't sound cool at all.

What about Seven? It's a beautiful name, for a boy or a girl.

Maybe is not a name in English and it would likely cause a lot of confusion as people would not understand that it is a name. Cherry is also not a common name. Drinkwater and Booty sound ridiculous as names.

Cherry is not a normal name for a man (or any person for that matter); you will only be ridiculed. The same goes for "maybe," "drinkwater," and "booty." I'm frankly surprised that you chose several words with a sexual connotation, which would even elicit disgust from people. If you want a less common name, choose "Bart," "Randy" (since you love the sexual names), "Lyle," "Hugo," or something.
culdusaq
You're joking right?
ballroombritz
There is a character in a popular tv show whose name is pronounced the same as “maybe”. This was intended to be a strange name. I think it’s sort of pretty but honestly it is likely to cause confusion
choobie-doobie
Cherry isn't a common name. it's a stripper or porn name.  and i seriously doubt you've met people named Drinkwater and Booty  are you German?
skizelo
A bit peculiar, and possibly confusing, but I'd probably accept it readily enough. Like you say, there are some unique names out there. There was a character in the sitcom Arrested Development called "Maeby" (pronounced "maybe") which did cue up some clever jokes. I just checked and they made it up for the show.

If you have a choice (which you obviously do) I strongly suggest you *not* choose a name that can lead to confusion or mockery.
Izzy_The_Queen
Like other people are saying, please choose a different name 🙏😭 despite how cool it may sound to you, in English it’s a really mundane word, it’s like naming yourself “if”. It doesn’t mean anything special. It’s also used a lot in general conversation and it may be hard to tell what people are actually saying. If you want to name yourself something different, you can go with a name like onyx, hazel, opal or rose.
Agreeable-Fee6850
I would say about 80% of people would laugh in your face when you tell them your name is maybe.
YEETAWAYLOL
Op, all the weirder names you have written (booty, cherry) sound like stripper names. You don’t want a stripper name.

Interesting!
