I really struggle to speak English

Timely-Brilliant7618
Hey everyone! I wanted to ask something. I've been trying to use "comprehensible input" and have spent over two years consuming English podcasts and videos. I understand almost 50% of what I hear and read, but when it comes to speaking, I freeze up and it's making me feel frustrated. I'm from Argentina and I'm in Croatia now. I came here to work for the summer season, and there are people from all over the world, but I can't speak English. Any suggestions?

Practice makes perfect

Depending on what the issue is (probably either struggling to find words or getting caught up on mispronunciations), you’ll want to do different things. If you are having issues recalling (thinking of) words, something really helpful is to try talking to yourself **in English**, whether describing things around you, imagining conversations, or something else. This will help you create sentences quicker and really strengthen your *active* vocabulary. If your issue is mispronunciation, you will again want to practice, but maybe by reading English out loud, just to practice the sounds. Having someone who knows English and can give feedback would be helpful for this.

Hi! I’m open to teaching English if you’re is interested. (Females only due to religious reasons). I’m 25F and am from UK, so I can teach British English. Also open to just speaking and making friends!

First off, it’s awesome that you’ve already put in so much time with comprehensible input, that 50% understanding is a solid foundation. The “I understand a lot but can’t speak” stage is super common (I’ve been there too), and it just means your brain’s been in input mode for a while and now needs a bit of a push into output. One thing that helped me a lot was daily dictation practice. Just take short, natural sentences, listen to them, and write down exactly what you hear then check and correct. It sounds simple, but it trains your listening, spelling, grammar awareness, and especially helps you get used to forming sentences. lwlnow com you can paste in any sentence and it’ll turn it into a dictation exercise with audio. It’s what I used when I felt stuck like you. Also, don’t stress too much speaking will come faster once you start building confidence with small, controlled output. Even 10 minutes a day can make a big difference.

Read things out loud, and try to speak to yourself whenever you can

I mean, for what it's worth, your English is great (in written form at least). As for the language, I need to say the one thing I know many language learners dread. You need to speak! You're going to struggle, and you're going to make mistakes, but practice makes perfect. You can consume all the content you want, but nothing will teach you like using the language.

Have you tried using an AI tool like chatGPT in voice mode? You could tell it you're learning and to correct sentence structure etc. It would be a way practicing where you don't need to worry about freezing up

Exposure and practice. It’s really hard if you don’t grow up being exposed to the language regularly. Even if you’re in your twenties, your ears don’t receive languages like they do when you’re a child, and if you get nervous, your speaking suffers. I’m the opposite of you - an L1 English speaker who only started learning Spanish when I moved to Spain at 25. I lived there for 4 years, and in Colombia for 4 years in my 30s, and when I speak Spanish now sometimes people ask if my parents were Latino (which feels good, no doubt 😃). But I still don’t understand someone speaking Spanish unless I fully pay attention. If a Spanish language TV program is on in the background, I understand about 20% of what I hear unless I FOCUS on it. And there are some people whose accents I still just don’t understand. It’s frustrating, and sometimes embarrassing. You’ll get there - but it takes (a lot of) time. Enjoy Croatia - it’s a fun place (but young people there speak very good English, I know…)

Communicate with people in english,do not use your first language which you are always comfortable with, you'll learn eventually in just a few months if u r a quick learner, I was also in the same situation as you during my college years as I never used to soeak a word with anyone, but over the years I have perfected my English and I feel comfortable everytime I speak.but learning never stops if you know what I mean I still learn new words everyday

I totally get this! I’ve been there understanding a lot but freezing up when it’s time to speak. It’s like your brain knows the words, but your mouth just won’t cooperate. 😅 One thing that helped me was practicing with language exchange partners (even if it felt awkward at first). Also, shadowing repeating phrases right after you hear them in podcasts can train your mouth to move naturally.

Hey! I really relate to what you're going through — and you're definitely not alone. A lot of people understand English well but still struggle to *speak* it confidently, especially in real conversations when the pressure is on. I'm actually working on a project to help with exactly this issue — turning all that passive input (videos, podcasts, etc.) into active, confident speaking. If you're open to it, I'd love to hear more about your experience. It would really help shape what I'm building. If you have 5 minutes, here's a quick form where you can share your experience: 👉 [https://forms.gle/LCNvL4NNivYvPpRc9](https://forms.gle/LCNvL4NNivYvPpRc9) Thanks either way — and respect for putting yourself out there. You've already done the hardest part by moving abroad and trying to speak up. Keep going 🙌

Watch American television shows. You will get a sense of the common vernacular. I recommend classic Simpsons.

Do you play video games? Try playing single-player games with a lot of talking in English and respond out loud to the characters however you want. Doing this in apex (with my mic off) did wonders for my Japanese speaking confidence

Ah, I'd love to try out your project! I've already filled out the form.

Speak with someone everyday in English. DM me if you’d like me to be your guinea pig 😆

Start thinking in English. I was the same, but practice thinking exclusively in english help me level up tremendously.

You can speak to people in dedicated events for matched practice at a speaking club like speakduo or langclub

Find a speaking partner. Make a post about it here; state what you want from your partner, example: I want someone who are interested in speaking with RP british accent. I found mine that way. You can talk with them on discord dm, FB messenger or whatsapp.

Try to use the voice assistant and try not to get frustrated. Particularly Siri from Apple is really dumb if you do not have a proper pronunciation. :-)
