Is there a word that sounds offensive or weird in English from your first language?

The word that means 'you are' in Korean sounds like the N word. One of my biggest fear is getting stoned to death socially by humming a song containing that word mindlessly... 😭

- The Chinese word “that one” also sounds like the N word. - Also, in my hometown, people say “fu” instead of “ouch” (“Fu” has no bad meaning in Chinese). People make this sound instinctively when they get hurt. I had to fight my instincts to not make this sound after I moved to an English speaking country.

German word for fat is ‘dick’ and the word for father is ‘vater’ pronounced farter

Not first language. But the Māori work for listen is “whakarongo”. And to my ear as a primary school student in compulsory language class the beginning of the word is pronounced very similar to “fucker”.

the place my wife is from is the spanish word for black. it was funny when a local band tweeted "We love you, N\*gros!" and a bunch of americans got really upset.

The word for “word” in Irish is “focail”. That might not look too bad, but the first syllable is literally pronounced “fuck”. 😭

The English verb « bite » is the French equivalent of « dick » or « cock ». And, it is not offensive but still funny, « pain » designates the bread.

The Hebrew word for stop/enough sounds like “die”, and it’s a very common incident abroad that people yell it to their misbehaving children, and English speakers stare in shock.

Not really but I remember some English-speakers found it hilarious when they wandered to the snacks section of our supermarkets and found large packages of potato chips with the big words MEGA PUSSI printed on them. Pussi just means bag, it was like "mega bag" but they of course read it as... you know

In Polish we say we „molest someone” a lot in jest. No it’s not an edgy joke, we just use this word in its original meaning (including in English), it means to just bother someone.

In Japanese, “フォーク” (fork), which is transliterated from English, sounds similar to “fuck”. Even one of my Japanese teachers was trying not to laugh as he was teaching us the word for the first time.

Yep. “Fac eu” in romanian, sounds kind of like fuck you but it means “ill do it”, “bici” kind of sounds like bitch, not as much though. Also we have the word “cum” which means “how”, and it looks bad but it’s pronounced like “coom”

There's a Russian anecdote about a granny who visits America and asks the cashier to give her some semolina (дай манки / die monkey). I've omitted one detail, but you can infer it

Quite the opposite I guess. The word "meme" means "boob, tits" in turkish. Also the pronunciation of the "six" word which is like "siks" essentially has the "dick" word on it. My mummy used to laugh when I tinker with numbers when speaking English 😂😂

In the play Henry V there is a scene near the end where Katherine is trying to learn English words. She doesn’t like the language because she misunderstands foot as foutre and count as con.

I'm a native English speaker, but there's one that always gets me. Japanese loan words are usually very intuitive, but of course the word for the act of splashing (there's no 1:1 translation) is the name of a sex act in English (bukkake).

In Polish the word być (to be) sounds very much like the English "bitch".

German sechs (six) sounds like sex German Fahrt (drive *n.*) sounds like fart Dutch vak (section/subject) sounds like fuck Dutch kant (side) sounds very much like cunt

In Czech "fakt" is a very common word which originally means "a fact" but in colloquial speech it's more commonly used as an adverb meaning "really", and foreigners often mishear it as "fuck(ed)"

Mmm, there was a scandal at the University of Southern California because of a business professor using the Chinese “umm” in a business global communications class. He got fired.

English is my first language and this example looks worse in writing than it sounds in speech but French for late (as in behind schedule, not late as in late at night) is en r slur The reason it doesn't sound as bad in speech is because the d isn't pronounced
