To come undone

I was watching a movie and there was that phrase I found curious. What does it mean?

To break into pieces, fall apart, collapse. It can be used for objects, but for a person to "come undone" means that they reached an emotional breaking point.

It means she pulled a string on his sweater while he walked away. *Weezer song reference*

If you say a person has become undone, it means their behavior is broken down, erratic, dangerous, reckless, unhinged, or even possibly insane.

It's like "He has fallen apart"

Literally it means to become unfastened or secured, like 'my shoelace has come undone. I need to tie my shoes' It's commonly used as a metaphor to mean disorganized, chaotic, or out of control. The writer is saying their husband is, in some way, out of norm, like the human equivalent of an unbuttoned shirt.

He's having a mental breakdown of some kind He *might* have suffered some shock/trauma (e.g. a loved one died, fired) or he's succumbing to an illness like schizophrenia or dementia and now he's no longer himself. "He's going crazy."

Worth watching the video of Duran Duran’s Come Undone if you want a visual representation.

It's a metaphor where you equate a person's mental or emotional state to that of an object that is falling apart (becoming undone)

It's similar to saying they've "fallen to pieces", or "come apart" - their life has *unravelled*; everything is going wrong. When your life is going well, everything is "held together"; when things go wrong in your life, it's like when you undo your shoes - your life falls apart. https://www.reddit.com/r/EnglishLearning/comments/18ub9ci/what_does_come_undone_mean/ https://www.reddit.com/r/EnglishLearning/comments/18ass4t/what_does_come_undone_mean_in_this_song/ https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/566ru0/eli5what_does_the_phrase_to_come_undone_mean/ https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/come_undone

In this context, for a person to "come undone", it would mean reaching an emotional/mental breaking point, having a mental breakdown, losing their mind.

It means to unravel. To lose yourself to anger, sadness, insanity, etc. Which of those it is depends on context. See also the responses to [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/EnglishLearning/s/fhkzreqkho) for more explanations.

With more context, I could give you a better answer. "Come undone" literally means "become unfastened". United, unwrapped, unwrapped, unbuttoned, etc. If I undo my necktie, my necktie has come undone; I untied the knot. Metaphorically, it often refers to a kind of failure. When your plans have come undone, you did not do the thing you intended. When a person has come undone, they may be failing at multiple things they are trying to do. They may be slipping into depression, or madness, or some other mental illness. They may be losing their sense of self. It's hard to say for certain without the context of the film.

to come undone means to fall apart, to collapse as all component parts separate. in this case, it is used metaphorically and, depending on context, could refer to emotional collapse (positive or negative), or to sexually reach completion (as in, reached the peak and collapsed)
