Why do I keep hearing "Do you mad?" instead of "Are you mad?" 😭 Am I tripping?

Why do I keep hearing "Do you mad?" instead of "Are you mad?" 😭 Am I tripping?

Movie: Past Lives (2023). I watched it with someone, and he insists that he heard "Are you mad?". I swear, it doesn’t make any sense to me. 😭 I know that's the grammatically correct version, and the subtitles SRT confirmed it. BUT no matter how many times I replay the line, I can only hear "Do you mad?". What do you hear, anyway?

It is definitely 'are you mad'. What might be tripping you up is that we don't enunciate every word or syllable equally (and doing so would sound very robotic, like the text-to-speech you'd hear five or ten years ago). Certain words in our sentences are emphasized and are pronounced more clearly than other words, which can change quite a lot in sound compared to the word in isolation. That's part of the rhythm and cadence of our speech. For example, in the previous sentence, "of our" in "... cadence of our speech" is de-emphasized, and I'd pronounce this very rapidly as something vaguely sounding like 'uvr', but 'cadence' and 'speech' would be fully enunciated.

I agree, it does kinda sound like "do", but she is saying "are", she's sort of baby-talking and compressing the word "are".

yes, you're tripping. even the subtitles say "Are you mad?". you barely hear the "are" though. it's a lot clearer if you wear headphones.
Fun_Push7168
It's " are you" She just babytalks it. I can definitely see where you're getting "do" though.

You are indeed tripping

I heard oo you mad? The oo, I take as an /r/ , but only because of the context I'm going to say that something was cut and you're only hearing part of the vowel-like sound of whatever was said. Her next sentence is either feels like you are OR ih feels like you are This speaker swallows her words!

I can hear it both ways. The "are" sounds distorted. It was certainly intended to be "are" The audio distortion and her accent together caused it to sound like "do." Without the audio distortion, she's pronouncing "are" as "uh." So don't try to hear the 'r' sound because it isn't there. She's basically saying "uh you mad?"

I heard "do you" the first time but I could hear "are you" after listening closely

It is “are you mad?”, but the “are” isn’t really pronounced at all. It’s almost just a noise followed by “you mad?” But that’s fairly common

I have auditory processing disorder, to me it also sounds like “do you mad”.
Dilettantest
Yes. You are.

Making intelligible speech out of the sounds that come from people’s faces takes a lot of processing and can go wrong (unfamiliar accents, garbled song lyrics). But once you’ve misheard a recording, it’s an effort to hear it any other way. The “Yanny or Laurel” auditory illusion was an example of the stability of an arbitrary interpretation, and this one lets you really hear whichever of two options you expect to hear: [Brainstorm or Green needle?](https://youtu.be/qXxV2C1ri2k)

Wait tbh I also hear do you mad as a native speaker and had to relisten a few times to hear the are you mad so I understand where you’re coming from.
Embarrassed_Foot92
I think she pronounces it more like "rew mad?" Instead of "R U mad". Though, I only hear "do you mad"

I think that people are pulling your leg. I have listened half a dozen times and always hear "Do you mad?" even when I listened for "Are you mad?" Usually, when people argue about what was said, I can hear both versions, depending on which I listen for, but with this clip, the first syllable/word that the woman says, has, to my ears, clearly about the same vowel sound as the second. It seems strange to me that people hear the word "Are" there, unless maybe the expectation of that word was so strong that caused a sort of auditory hallucination for some listeners.

honestly, it sounds like both also, fyi, the subtitles don't always perfectly match what they're actually saying
yazilimciejder
Same here, I hear 'do' but I think it is because of our native language. I think there is no 'do' or 'are' because she doesn't say any of them clearly.
ThePikachufan1
It's said quickly don't sound more like "er you mad" but it's definitely "are you mad"
SnooDonuts6494
She's muttering, but I'd *assume* it was "Are you mad?" from the context. "Do you mad" doesn't make any sense. Don't worry about it. You can't always understand every word that everyone says, in any language.

I’m a native English speaker and I kind of hear “do you mad”. She just isn’t enunciating well here.
BarfGreenJolteon
i think the audio might be clipping the beginning of “Are” I totally understand where it’s coming from but I regret to inform you: You are tripping.
tanya6k
You're not tripping, someone just did a crappy job of capturing her voice on the microphone. The tone was successfully captured but the consonants were not so your brain fills in the gaps of what it can recognize hence you getting the phrase "do you mad?" The actress clearly has a very strong American accent so we can assume she's most likely saying the correct grammatical phrase "are you mad?"
meNmyCoins
I can hear both. If I expect her to say “do” that’s what I hear, but if I’m expecting “are” I’ll hear that.
God_Bless_A_Merkin
Do you tripping?
carrimjob
she’s saying “d-are you mad?” but that’s because her mouth is opening to make the sound. i hear what you’re hearing, but “do you mad?” doesn’t make sense in english, so we can safely assume she said “are”
Mhd-a_seeker
It’s kind of ‘E You mad’
1028ad
When speaking, “do you” would sound more like “d’you”. In that video you can hear “x” + “you”, so it wouldn’t be probable for it to be “do you”.
erraticerratum
Not tripping, I think? I also hear "Do you mad?"
StuffedSquash
You are not tripping! She is saying "are" but in a very specific way and it does sound a lot like "do" with the audio quality.
Small-Relation3747
I cannot hear are you mad?, just you mad?
old-town-guy
I hear, “Are you mad?”
