What’s the ONE English word you always mess up — no matter how many times you learn it?

Impressive_man_1504
We all have that one word… You hear it. You read it. You learn it. Then boom — you forget how to pronounce it or use it again. 😂 For me, it’s “entrepreneur” — my tongue gives up every time. What’s your personal “enemy word” in English? Let’s make a wall of pain below 👇

I always mess up similar words like 'contempt' and 'contend', 'conceive' vs 'concede' etc.

The nice thing is this: “entrepreneur” is a French word, so you can blame them!

Inflammable and flammable. I used to be always confused between these two words. But turns out they have the same meaning! (English is not my main language)

As for spelling: unnecessary. As for pronunciation: adult.

I remember the one class I taught. It was about criticism. Everyone started the class pronouncing criticism perfectly, but the more you say a word, the stranger it sounds. And by the end, everyone was making mistakes

The combination of "guard" and "gauge". I can absolutely never remember which is A-U and which is U-A.

For me it's writing a few words. It's and it's always messes me up. I cannot spell definitely without help usually. I also frequently type the as teh.

It’s hard to pronounce “World”, it always comes out weird

George Bush Jr famously said, the French don't have a word for 'entrepreneur'. It isn't English but has been adopted as a gender-neutral word over the last few decades, to combat the use of businessman and the very clunky businesswoman.

There's definitely one - but I can't even remember it now 💀

The difference of pronunciation between "cheap", "sheep", and "ship".

"Ex**a**mple" because in french it's "Ex**e**mple". I always forget which one is french and which one is the English one

American, native speaker here. I’ve got two that no matter how hard I try, I can never say either of them without sounding like I’m having a stroke: - Arnold Palmer (the drink, I’d never talk about the golfer) - Rural Juror. (Courtesy of 30 Rock and Tina Fey’s genius writing)

"archipelago" 😩

Diarrhoea. Phone autocorrect can’t even save me usually. I had to look it up just now to write this comment…

Native speaker: I’m always going to spell rhythm, broccoli, and parallel wrong the first time through. I can tell when they are wrong once I see them, but I am flipping a coin every time I write them. Just last night my kid made fun of me for my pronunciation of “palanquin”—sometimes we carry our cat around on a cushion and describe it as her palanquin, so it comes up a lot. I read the word many times before I heard it out loud, and the incorrect pronunciation seems to have fossilized in my brain.

"Floccinaucinihilipilification". Just kidding. For me, it's "GET" because it is so versatile. It's been a month and a half since I started learning English, and this is by far the hardest for me to use especially in Causative Structures.

I am a native speakers, and I can never spell separate correctly. I always spell it as "seperate"

I am a native speaker and still struggle with rural lol Like a German trying to say squirrel Yet again, if you asked Americans to try to say the German word for squirrel (eichörnchen) they’d die

I’m told I sound very natural, but I’m very skeptical as I have yet to successfully pronounce my Ps any different than I do my Bs. Peach and beach are fine to mix up, mixing pitch and the other word is when people start side eyeing me.

I don't judge you for getting help from ai but... be calm and let the ai rest. a little. and drop your whip on the ground, slowly.

Native English speaker but militarism gets me every time. I can't pronounce it for the life of me.

I’m a native speaker but my adopted sister is not and spent the first few years of her life only speaking Isan. And she cannot, for the life of her, say “fire extinguisher”.
Shinyhero30
Long, useless words that I know because I’m a nerd (eg: “pneumoultramicroscopisilicovolcanoconiosis” (yes that is real and yes it’s extremely specific)) And uses of “they’re”, “there”, and their” if I’m tired, I frequently mix them up. Which is like only a native thing because you like have to be thinking in the sounds of the language to actually mess those up. Other classics are tired me trying to handwrite anything and “it’s vs its”
smolfatfok
I always have to look up how to spell *announcement* even though I read/use it at least one a week at work.

'Cautiously' and 'consciously' often sound very similar to me when spoken. So, I sometimes get confused and have to guess which one was meant.
